It is amazing what a little din-din can do for a person. I saw Mak early yesterday and he looked so weak, drained and hungry. He and I even talked about how much he craved an Oscar's "California, no pico" burritto. He semed to be okay in conversation, but his words would trail off and I didn't want to keep asking him, what did you say. So I left a little discouraged.
But hallelujah to Taco Bell. I returned after the hospital dinner hour and he had eatten a lot, but still was craving more. We, not surprisingly got back in the discussion of burritos. David said he'd got pick up some Taco bell for him. After a hearty beef wrap and chicken soft taco Mak was on que. He was chatting up about everyone in the family and his friends from Cal. And yes, Lorna, Dave, Allison, Amy, Kipp, and Leah, (etc) he remembers you all...and shared stories that probably should have stayed in the vault.
Mak is still the sweetest and loving person he has always been. When Quinn was leaving, my 9 month old, he turned to me and said, "you are taking my sunshine away." I melted to say the least.
But the seal of the deal that made me realize that "Mak is Back" was when I asked him how things were going with his mom being with him all the time. Now if anyone knows these twos relationship, you know that they love to drive each other crazy. Well Maks response was priceless, he rolled his eyes and said "I just ignore her now." I got all teary eyed and new in my heart that in time everything was going to be alright. Just shows, that love doesn't have to come in the form of hugs and I love yous, but ignoring someone can be just as comforting.

ReplyDelete9a to 9a. I will be there from 3-6. So if you guys can come anytime before or afterwould be ideal for me. They claim only 2 guest at a time. If not, I can certainly try to share my cousin :)
ReplyDeleteAHHHH - I hate being this far away.

ReplyDeleteAt this point, knowing that Mak will be transfered soon to Vallejo, come when it is best for you. The more people he can see when he is in Sac the better.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually planning on 2:30, but I can bump it up to 2 if that works better?
ReplyDelete2:30 is fine.
ReplyDeletethrilled to hear Mak is doing well!!!
ReplyDeletesuch good news! i'm glad mak hasn't lost his sense of sarcasm, or his appetite. maybe we'll get lucky and he'll decide he no longer needs ketchup on all of his food... sending so much love from san diego!

Will we be able to visit him once he is transferred to Vallejo?
ReplyDeleteI wanted to share my experience at the hospital with you guys today. In short, it was really fantastic.
ReplyDeleteWhen I arrived, Mak and Joan were watching women’s softball and I was looking for a seat. Mak turned to me, said hello, then lifted his robe a bit up his leg. He said, “There’s always room in the bed!”
We joked back and forth for quite a bit. He was lucid, quick and often witty with his responses. It was unbelievable to me. After joking around for a bit and asking him questions about his condition, who he remembers, etc., the physical therapist at the hospital asked him if he wanted to walk around and he jumped right up! We walked about 100-150 paces. He did a really great job and it was the first time he’d walked in that capacity since his accident. It was great to witness.
I told him over and over that he's doing fantastic and that he looked great. He was appreciative and gave some modest "thank you's" and smiled. He knows it. He definitely is improving and he's very eager to get to rehab and get better there. The difference between this visit and my last visit with him when he was conscious in Oakland is very stark. He was much, much more coherent and aware than the last time I saw him.
ReplyDeleteThere's still a ways to go no doubt, but he was doing so great when I was there. And not just in terms of how lucid and coherent his speech was... he was happy, smiling and joking around with us. It was really, really awesome.
They tested his heart today and pending the results, he may or may not be heading to Vallejo tomorrow to begin a 3-5 week rehab program.
Oh, and he definitely wants a California burrito no pico a.s.a.p. Someone’s gotta get on that!
Wow that is incredible.. walking! If he is still in sacramento tomorrow I have to come see him. He sounds like he has made leaps and bounds since our visit just this past weekend. Keep it up buddy!
ReplyDeleteAdam Zettel, Brian King and I went and saw Mak tonight. I think he was a bit tired but none the less kept us amused. When we got there he was in the bathroom doing his thing, which is a huge feat for him, so we didn’t mind waiting. I am not sure he knew who any of us were, but Brian started talking about swim times and records and Mak started throwing out race times for his 50 free, and Adam had on a water polo shirt and Mak was talking about a shirt he had. He was watching basketball and I asked him who was going to win the game and he told me he didn’t have any money to bet on the game. While Dave was showing me some photo albums, Brian and Mak start talking about Rome and adventures and Mak recalled a lot about his trip and where he lived and who he saw. He was calling Dave “Dad” and seemed to look to Dave for reassurance when he was unsure about something. Over all we got the impression he would rather be swimming and eating burritos or chicken nuggets and that laying in his bed was not exactly amusing or comfortable.
